The completion of the Human Genome Project in 2001 provided a strong stimulus to protein research, because understanding of protein structure, function and expression is essential for making use of the information in gene sequences. As a result, novel approaches were initiated in protein research such as proteomics, as well as the strengthening of traditional approaches such as protein crystallography and study of molecular action. Thus, the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) was founded in 2001. Then, regional organizations in proteomic and protein research were initiated, namely the Asian Oceania Human Proteome Organization (AOHUPO) and the Asian Pacific Protein Association (APPA).
In Thailand, proteomic research was started at the Laboratory of Biochemistry, Chulabhorn Research Institute in 1998. Then, the Center for Excellence in Protein Structure and Function was established at Mahidol University in 2002, and through networking with researchers throughout the country, the Protein Society of Thailand (PST‎) began in 2006 and became formally registered in 2010. PST has arranged Annual Symposia since 2006, and joined AOHUPO and APPA. The Protein Society of Thailand is honored to have been selected as the host of the 7th AOHUPO Congress in 2014, which will be held in conjunction with the 9th International Symposium of the Protein Society of Thailand, on the 6-8th of August, 2014, in Bangkok, and will cover not only proteomic research but all other areas of protein research.
